Hullubullu wishes to thank our two amazing little models' Bella and Finn who featured in today's Polio awareness and fundraiser at Vicarys Winery at Luddenham. The event was organized by the Rotary Clubs of Wallacia / Mulgoa, Mt Druitt and St Marys to help match the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation fight against Polio. The guest's started the afternoon with Wine Tasting followed by lunch in the historic woolshed and finished with the fashion parade. A percentage of profits from Hullubullu's store set up on location was donated to the foundation.

Flooding Death in Newtown

Newtown Mourned the loss of an old if not despised mate during minor flooding which lashed the Inner West after a storm swept through late Sunday.

This Old friend was found outside the Post Office on Erskineville Road, and leaves behind many devastated family members after a short but well satisfied life behind Newtown's famed restaurant strip.

Police were not called to the scene however any further witness's are requested to contact us at Hullubullu.

This week's window was inspired by a visit to the Weekend organic growers market at Addison Rd, Marrickville (every Sunday). A shop keeper gave us this georgeous cardboard box from Mt Whitestone Farms, who grow Broccoli, Cabbages and Cauliflower (the Vegies Kids Love...)they are located near Gatton 100km West of Brisbane. The art is from a time gone by and beautifully reproduced on the cardboard. We've teamed this up with a few Cauli's and a Cabbage and like coloured garments from our range, including an Australian Made Boys Long Sleeve shirt, reduced this week (instore only) to $40.00 ($54.95) with Kookids Denim Jeans ($59.95/$64.95). This morning we were reading a copy of the "Ovens & Murray Advertiser dated July 4, 1880 (as you do) and came accross this Advert for a "Miracle" cure for teething and other child sickness. Could Mrs Winslows Soothing Syrup be this amazing??Google brought up a georgeous image from a 1887 advert.

Mrs. Winslow's Soothing Syrup.
Mrs. A. H. L. took her 20-months-old boy to visit some friends, and, while there, they (all unknown to her) fed him some unpeeled apple and other indigestible material. Being colicky all that night and next morning, she was persuaded by a “friend” to purchase a two-ounce vial of the nostrum sold as “Mrs. Winslow’s Soothing Syrup,” and of this gave him half-teaspoonful doses, as the directions called for, although she insists half of each quantity was spilt through his struggling.

He took, therefore, the first dose at 4 o’clock on Sunday afternoon (Aug 24), and, there being no effect, another at 8 ; then dozing, but not sleeping, from this time till 3 next morning, the pain starting him again to whining, he was dosed at 5; still crying on, three-quarters of an hour later the final similar amount was administered.

The mother soon became alarmed at the marked stupor which now set in. He would touch none of the breakfast placed before him, Mrs. L. said ; although sitting upright in his high chair, his head hung listlessly and he recognized nobody.
The pupil was contracted down to the typical pin-head ; stupor was unmistakable ; respiration was very slow, gasping and shallow, while at irregular intervals he would take two or three rapidly succeeding deep sighs, while the pulse was rapid and small; the extremities were cold throughout the case. Taking all these symptoms into consideration, and the fact that the breath bore the peculiar odor of an opiate, I felt warranted in treating the case for one of poisoning by some preparation or derivative of that drug.:

…this case is merely placed on record to help to expose an existing evil, believing that continuous agitation will finally induce the intelligent public to demand the regulation of the sale of patent medicines; a fact concerning which there never was any doubt in the profession. … The case is the more pertinent at this time, when any fakir or shopkeeper may legally retail unlabeled poison in the guise of patent medicines, while one of our inconsistent laws is now being so interpreted as to inform the patient that, in nine cases out of ten, his doctor has prescribed him medicine containing poison.

It will come as no surprise to the modern reader to find the active ingredients of “nostrums” were quite frequently cocaine, opium/heroin/morphine or cannabis extracts. Damn right they worked! Specificity and safety might have been a little problem, however…

It is believed half-teaspoon of Mrs Winslow’s Soothing Syrup would equal almost 5 mg of morphine.

Cool Weather combined with recent Rains was all we needed for a day of Mushrooming in the Pine Forest's surrounding the Jenolan Caves region. We drove over the Blue Mountains and travelled along the Jenolan Caves Rd through the Village of Hampton then turning right onto the Oberon Rd. The Pine Forest's appear almost immeadiately and we turned off onto one of the many tracks and the Kids headed into the forest with baskets, and parents in tow.

Darcy, Finn and Tully found 100's of Pine Mushrooms under the canopy, some as large as dinner plates. We then took a few shots of the kids in the forest, wearing our latest Hullubullu designs, completing our winter shoot. We dined on soup and bread, then made our way back home to cook up Garlic Mushies.

Wow! what a morning in Sydney as we were enveloped in a thick red dust brought in from the outback. It also happened to be our scheduled summer fashion Shoot.... Our little Man finn did really well in tough conditions and we managed to get a great pic before abandoning the rest of the shoot. It was more akin to a Summer Bushfire.

Happy Mothers Day , hope you were able to manage a little sleep in. We headed out for a Yum Cha Breakfast in Sydney's Chinatown district. Our little Finn used his latest Panda Chopsticks (from Hullubullu of course) with great success. Although a little of the excess food was worn on his shirt, we found his funky black swirl shirt was the perfect match to hide all the stains.

(For some reason I've noticed Finn is holding my choptsicks not his own Funky ones??)

This week, actually most weeks we source our props such as all the boxes from Reverse Garbage in Marrickville, which is a not-for-profit co-operative that sells industrial discards, off-cuts and over-runs to the public for creative and practical uses, reducing the amount of waste going to landfill. Sunday Sleep in...... Our 2 1/2 year old Finn woke at 6.15, little early for a Sunday. But he had another Dry Bed so all's well. Breaky at Pastizzi Cafe in South King Street, serving small Flaky pastries filled with Chicken & Mushroom and Chilli Con Carne. Newtown must of partied hard last night as the streets are deserted.

After a kick of the footy at the park it was off to Hullubullu to open and hang our latest arrival, Girls Rashie tops all Pinks Purples and a touch of Blue. We'll take some pix tonight.
